Voici une carte postale d'Amsterdam. Elle nous montre le Prinsengracht et, en arrière-plan, la Westertoren. Amsterdam compte plus d'une centaine de kilomètres de canaux. Les trois principaux sont appelés Herengracht, Prinsengracht et Keizersgracht. Cette carte nous montre le Prinsengracht, creusé au 17ème siècle. La zone des canaux du 17e siècle formant un anneau autour de la ville est inscrite sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO.
La Westerkerk, et plus particulièrement sa tour appelée la Westertoren, est l'église la plus célèbre d'Amsterdam. Dans son célèbre journal, Anne Frank a écrit qu'elle ne pouvait entendre les cloches de la Westerkerk. L'église a été construite entre 1620 et 1632, mais sa tour de 85 mètres a été terminée en 1638.
