I have received a card from San Francisco showing the palace of fine arts and the famous golden gate bridge.
The Palace of Fine Arts is a monumental structure originally constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in order to exhibit works of art presented there. Amsterdam

J'aimerais bien y retourner...

A few days ago, I received a postcard from Amsterdam. Amsterdam is, of course, the largest city and the capital of the Netherlands. Amsterdam has a population of 785,000 and a metropolitan population of more than 2 millions.
Its name is derived from Amstelredamme, indicative of the city's origin : a dam in the river Amstel.
The city is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, receiving more than 4.5 millions international visitors annually.
When we arrive in Amsterdam, we discover a marvelous architecture and the 17th-century canals of Amsterdam (in Dutch: 'Grachtengordel'), located in the heart of Amsterdam. The Grachtengordel were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2010.
The Amsterdam canal system is the result of conscious city planning. In the early 17th century, a plan was developed that was based on four concentric half-circles of canals with their ends emerging at the Ij bay.
Other famous tourist attractions are the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank’s House, the Red light district (an area for legalised prostitution where sex workers offer their services behind a window or a glass door, typically illuminated with red lights), Coffee shops and Diamond factories... But these are just some examples !
Amsterdam is a beautiful town where I have been once. I’d like to go there again...

Dank u Sophie

Nijmegen

A postcard from Nijmegen in the east of the Netherlands, near the German border. It is the oldest city in the Netherlands. The town has celebrated its 2000th year of existence in 2005.
In 1678 Nijmegen was host to the negotiations between the European powers that aimed to put an end to the constant warfare that had ravaged the continent for years. The result was the famous Treaty of Nijmegen that, unfortunately, failed to provide for a lasting peace.
In 1940, Nijmegen was the first Dutch city to be invaded by the Germany. On February 22, 1944, Nijmegen was heavily bombed by American planes, causing great damage to the city centre. The American pilots thought they were bombing the German city of Kleve.

I have received a beautiful card from Milan in Italy. I went there few years ago. The postcard shows La Scala (Teatro alla Scala). It is the opera theater of Milan, but it is recognised as one of the leading opera in the World. La Scala was inaugurated on 3 August 1778.
La Scala's season traditionally opens on Saint Ambrose's Day (7 december). And an originality is that all performances must end before midnight, and long operas start earlier in the evening when necessary.

Hong Kong Mid Autumn Festival

Hong Kong’s Mid-Autumn Festival, as it is popularly known in the city, is, aside from Chinese New Year, Hong Kong’s biggest festival. It is also known as Lantern Festival and Moon Cake Festival
The Mid-Autumn festival sees the city draped in colourful ribbons and decorated with elaborate displays of lanterns, while restaurants will be serving up a variety of festival mooncakes, all this, as well as parades, dragon dances and celebrations around the city.
The date for the festival is set by the autumn equinox, when the moon is at its brightest.

Angel
