Cette tour est haute de 55m. Elle fut construite à la fin du Ier siècle, devint forteresse au Moyen Âge et fut complètement restaurée en 1791 par une sorte de chemisage de pierre autour de l’édifice antique très dégradé, ce qui eut pour effet de le remettre à neuf, en lui donnant son aspect actuel. La structure romaine est toujours visible à l'intérieur du monument.
La tour d'Hercule est le seul phare romain (et le plus ancien phare au monde) en fonctionnement de nos jours.
Le monument a été inscrit sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO en 2009.
The Hercules tower (Spanish: Torre de Hercules) is a Roman lighthouse located in La Coruña (A Coruña), Galicia (Spain).
This tower is 55m high. It was built in the first century, became a fortress in the Middle Ages and was completely restored in 1791 by a sort of stone lining around the ancient building, which had the effect of the refurbishes, in his giving its present appearance. The Roman structure is still visible inside the monument.
The Hercules Tower is the only Roman lighthouse (and the oldest lighthouse in the world) in operation today.
The monument was inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO in 2009.
