Abbaye de Lorsch

L’abbaye de Lorsch, fondée en 764, fut construite dans la plaine du Rhin et devint un important centre culturel au Moyen Âge. Elle a été fondée par le comte Cancor et sa tante Landrada de Hesbaye et a été occupée par des moines bénédictins venant de Gorze près de Metz. L'église a été consacrée par l'archevêque de Mayence Lull vers l'an 774 en présence de Charlemagne.

C'est l'un des monastères les plus célèbres de l'Empire carolingien. L'abbaye, avec son entrée monumentale, la célèbre «Torhalle», sont de rares vestiges architecturaux de l'époque carolingienne. Les sculptures et les peintures de cette époque sont encore dans un état remarquable.

En 1991, l'abbaye a été inscrite au patrimoine mondial par l'UNESCO.

Lorsch Abbey, founded in 764 was built in the Rhine valley and became an important cultural center in the Middle Ages. It was founded by Count Cancor and his aunt Landrada Hesbaye and was occupied by Benedictine monks from Gorze near Metz. The church was consecrated by the Archbishop of Mainz Lull around the year 774 in the presence of Charlemagne.

It is one of the most renowned monasteries of the Carolingian Empire. The abbey, together with its monumental entrance, the famous 'Torhall', are rare architectural vestiges of the Carolingian era. The sculptures and paintings from this period are still in remarkably good condition.

In 1991 the ruined abbey was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
