Moscow - The Cathedral of Christ the Savior

Une carte de Moscou montrant la cathédrale du Christ-Sauveur. Elle fut construite entre 1839 et 1883 sur les plans de l’architecte russe Constantin Thon, en mémoire de la victoire de la Russie sur la Grande Armée de Napoléon Ier. Suite à la révolution bolchévique, le projet de construction d'un Palais des Soviets à l'emplacement de la cathédrale eut pour conséquence la démolition de celle-ci, le 5 décembre 1931. La construction du gigantesque palais fut finalement interrompue par la Seconde Guerre mondiale. En 1958, on construisit une gigantèsque piscine à l'emplacement de la Cathédrale, la Piscine Moskva qui était la plus grande du monde. En septembre 1994, la piscine fut démontée sur décret du président Boris Eltsine, et le 7 janvier 1995, la première pierre de la nouvelle cathédrale du Christ-Sauveur fut posée par le patriarche Alexis II. Le monument fut finalement consacré le 19 août 2000.

It was built between 1839 and 1883 in terms of the Russian architect Konstantin Thon in memory of the victory of Russia in the Grand Army of Napoleon. Following the Bolshevik revolution, the construction of a Palace of Soviets on the site of the cathedral had the effect the demolition of this one on December 5, 1931. The construction of the gigantic palace was finally interrupted by World War II. In 1958 they built a giant swimmingpool on the site of the Cathedral, the Moskva swimming pool was the largest in the world. In September 1994, the pool was dismantled by decree of President Boris Yeltsin, and on January 7, 1995, the foundation stone of the new Cathedral of Christ the Savior was laid by the Patriarch Alexis II. The monument was finally dedicated on August 19, 2000.
