En 1678, Nimègue a accueilli les négociations entre les puissances européennes qui voulaient mettre un point d’arrêt aux guerres interminables qui ont ravagé le continent européen. Ils signèrent le fameux traité de Nimègue qui, malheureusement, cet essai échoua à donner une paix durable en Europe.
En 1940, Nimègue fut la première ville hollandaise envahie par les allemands. Le 22 février 1944, la ville fut sévèrement bombardée par les américains causant d’important dégats dans le centre de la ville. Les pilotes américains pensaient qu’ils étaient en train de bombarder la ville Allemande de Kleve.

In 1940, Nijmegen was the first Dutch city to be invaded by the Germany. On February 22, 1944, Nijmegen was heavily bombed by American planes, causing great damage to the city centre. The American pilots thought they were bombing the German city of Kleve.
